Your dead right there it is a great yarn, and I was just thinking if there was a way to research the history of it.

It reminds me of one I heard about Peter Brocks A9X. It's long winded but apparently true.

Attached are two photo's of the van's that where loaned to the team for the event from GMH plus the test car (Old Silver). The two other vans with Marlboro signage where owned by the rally team (George Shepheard ) and the race team (John Sheppard). As far as I am aware the two sign written vans where the workshop run arounds. The rally team van was used for many years after the Repco and was eventually painted in Castrol colours when the Castrol sponsored to Gemini's in various Australian and NSW State Championship events. The story I heard was that the race team van hit a wild horse or camel in outback Queensland and suffered a fair amount of damage.
The rally cars where specially built for the event. 18 cars where specially built for the event with extra spot welding. Barry Ferguson who came 2nd in the 79 Repco bought the #17 car back a couple years ago and restored the car and has competed in a couple of historic events in the car. I have serviced the car on one event and I can not get over how basic the cars where in comparison to modern PRC version of a Commodore.
