Can only be 1970. After about 1973 the coding changed and reset each decade so for example 1976, 86 and 96 use the exact same codes except 29B6 couldn't be 1986. The same date in 1972 would be B292.

Does it have 308 cast into the block? If it is a Red 308 out of a HT it shouldn't be in a VC Commodore.
Does it have an engine number?
It should have 308 on it, by that time the HP casting had all but finished. I was mixing my dates up too so it could be any HT or even early HG with that date code. I was for some reason thinking May 1969 which is almost certainly a Brougham 308.
If not decked the engine number will be 308Hxxxxx.
In the 80's Gem used whatever block in anything when you exchanged.
The motor does have 308h on it so must b early hg I recon and no its not orig for this car ,
