I think the $1,000 deposit is to hopefully weed out any would be thieves. There has been a couple of expensive performance car's been stolen during "test" drive's of late. $1,000 dollar's isn't much compared to the value of the ute, but it is something.

In those terms it is actually a good idea, and it may well cover your excess if it is stolen. This happened to an A9X hatchback I looked at in the early 90's. It was only $14k or something like that back then, but it went on a test drive and was stolen a few hours later, later to be recovered minus its tags and original engine but with Sunbird tags and another 308 in the engine bay.
