Two studs must have fractured when I got traction, and snapped off when I started driving. The mechanic reckons on a 35 year old car it was probably metal fatigue.
I replaced all the studs and will do the other wheels at some stage too. Probably a good heads up to everyone that this is something we kinda forget about. maybe replacing all the wheel studs is something to consider!

Then you can enjoy another 30 years of carefree motoring...
