So what would have been the diff between a HJ base model and a HX base model if the HJ had the same grille as a HX. The dash and ......?

Not much, HX carried on with HJ colour and trim.

Joe Punter buys a brand new HX Kingswood, all of it is a brand new HX not a HX with a surplus HJ grill.

Kingswood used a "HX" grille. Only Belmont and ute/van had the same grille as HJ.
