Me too. I've heard of a fair few going bang in Commodores, but to be fair the drivers were usually young dickheads with no mechanical sympathy and a bunch of dodgy modifications.

300 ft/lbs is around 400nm, maybe a shade over.

Still (agreeing with you), most modded engines will punch much higher than 400nm of torque anyway.
