VR SS into a VS Supercar Castrol Perkins Ingall 1997 Tribuilte build
Here are some pics of the one out of the SS..
I brought this from Americam Autos, back in 1997, for $395!! It was still in the Bridgestone Box and was brand new!
As you can see, it was manufactured in 1994.. Yes, it is a 3mm version..
I have a 5mm version here as well, but there is no date code on it, just the 282... part number.
cheers
Mick
ive got 10 or more broken/bent wheels hangin around here and when i get a chance i will go thru them all and see if any others have any sort of stamping/date code...i also have 2 more nos wheels at home which are 3 ml examples in bridgestone boxes, just cant get to them until i move a coupe and a van..![]()
can anyone confirm the rumour I've heard that after GM stopped making them they were remade by a third party (possibly bridgestone as eluded to in the previous post) however the black rubber wasnt quite as dark as the factory originals and had a considerably softer feel.
I've been told this by a few people but just wanted to know if this was merely a rumour or if there was truth to the matter.
You could get repro ones from rares in the early 90's. I wanted to buy one for my blue WB but the price was out of my budget. As far as I know they were made from the original tooling unlike the ones they produce now. Ozbox should be able to shed some light on this?
Maybe they were old stock judging by the inspection date on the one pictured. I was looking at them in about the end of 94 to 95.
gm never made them inhouse, they were outsourced to uniroyal and then uniroyal became bridgestone..
from what i have been told by the people on the ground at the time...back in the later 90s sometime the mould broke and was offered to rare spares but they did no take it and repair it so it was scrapped..
anything rares sold back in the 90s as a gts wheel was just that...a gts wheel produced by bridgestone and purchased from holden, rares reproduction wheel did not come out till a couple of years ago and is a pos..it does not even look like the original.
like all things that are produced from a mould, the mould wears and the part is not as good as one produced as a first run...
just as a matter of interest to people looking for nos parts..if you find rare spares packaged products and it is an 80s or 90s package it will be genuine holden..do not dismiss it as a rares copy.
customer came in driving this...
and on it was a rare spares wheel which he kindly let me measure and photograph..
they measure the same as the bridgestone 3 ml wheel...
differences if you look at the pics are.
they have a seperate boss to the wheel and these are held on by allen keys which you cand see in one of the pics behind the horn pad..
the boss is a totally different shape to the original.
the feel of the wheel is quite flimsy and my customers wheel had already broken at 1 spoke which really is unacceptable for any reproduction product.
you can see by the condition of the monaro that the wheel breaking would not be from any form of abuse..
