Anyone here up to speed on 'cruiser technicals?
I looked at a 2002 FJZ105R GXL the other day that had been converted into a dual cab ute with extended tray. Pretty decent job done on it.
Initially I thought it was a 100 series ie 4.7L V8 and A750F 5spd auto. But it was a 4.5L 6cyl petrol and 4spd auto. Solid front axle too, not IFS.
What are these like?
Mate of mine just got rid of one of those petrol cruisers. It did over 600000km with next to no dramas. However it was an absolute juice chewer apparently.
I've heard they were thirsty. I did look at buying a V8 auto 100 series and getting it converted to a ute, but I have heard there is a chance that GM will bring Chevy trucks to Australia post the end of Holden/Commodore/Calais in 2017. So I reckon I might wait in hope for some good news along those lines. They'll probably do something stupid like only sell them in Diesel in 2500HD and only petrol in 1500 spec.
What are the Toyota Tundra like? They seem to offer some good points over the Hilux. I wonder why Toyota don't offer them here.

A 200 series cruiser converted to ute would be the go the wagon is great brilliant diesel moter
It's got me stumped why Toyota does not bring out the Tarcoma here. My sister in law has a dual cab one in Canada. I drove it last time I was over there and it was a nice thing to drive. When I asked about fuel economy that reckoned they would get 8 to 10 km per litre on the highway. The sister in laws was fitted with a 4 litre V6 from memory. Decent wheel base on a dual cab so the rear axle sits mid tray so you could put a decent length tray (2300mm plus). The dual dab 710 series Land Cruisers are just way over price and are not much chop to drive. And to make it worse you can only get a 2100mm long tray on them. I'd have a another dual cab ute tomorrow if one of the manufacture offered one with a decent length tray at a decent price.
I have asked the same question for 5 years now! They are as big as a Landcruiser or Patrol though. Nissan have the Titan, similar thing.Originally Posted by wbute

Even better a petrol 200 series converted into a ute! A Lexus is better though as they have a 5.7L V8.
We do have a Tacoma, it is called a Hilux here. It is what I own now a 4.0L V6 auto, and is the only vehicle of its size worth having here in my opinion it is the only decent engine. We don't get the long bed option though which is I think the Xtra cab tub on a dual cab body and a 13" longer wheelbase. Mine easily gets close to 30MPG highway (10km/L - 10L/100kM) but less around town or towing.
My diesel Hilux averages 9.4k/litre. It's auto so no doubt the manual would be better. I would love one with an alloy V8 of some sort. Are the Lexus ones alloy? Toyota would sell a shed load if they made a V8 optional in the Hilux.
Mine averages about 7.1km/L which is about 14L/100. 9.4 is about 10.7L/100. My mate has the same SR5 as mine but D4D and 4spd auto and his averages 11.9L/100 but it like mine has had correct size tyres but on so the speedo reads right. His does a mix of city and highway like mine does, but he said it gets down to around 10 highway. Mine will go to about 10.5-11 highway. Mine used to show about 7.5-7.6 with the 15" tyres on it and the speedo read wrong.
Afaik the 100 series Landcruiser 4.7L is all alloy as is the Lexus 5.7L, but neither fits as they are too tall (already looked into it). An LS1 or LS2 fits easily but almost impossible to get it to talk with the A750F auto, best way is to fit a whole LS2 and 6L80E 6spd auto.
