This rebuild of this HJ ute of mine will be the death of me (three years I've been going at it but doing all of the work/paint/panel/etc myself but hey during this time I've moved twice, changed jobs once, started renovations and greeted another edition to the family 6 weeks back) as it was only ever going to be off the road for "a quick tidy up". Famous last words I know - it is stretching out a long way but I'm determined not to do a half rrr'sed job on it.
Anyway, the 308 in it wasn't all that bad (apart from a mild blown head gasket between two pots and a couple of welch plugs that looked a bit sus) as I had had the heads off and cam out of it about 5000km ago (although that was 2007). I decided to give it a reasonable freshen-up, so pulled the front panels off (didn't want them damaged) and ripped it out a couple of weeks back and dropped it off for cleaning up/machining. In the meantime I've used the opportunity to clean-up the engine bay a little better and tidy up the wiring etc.
Was thinking of using some of that black stove paint (or whatever works best) to coat the extractors after giving them a clean up on the wire brush/sanded. What have you folks used (of late) that seemed to work well and how well did it last?
Owing to heading deeper into a mortgage I probably wont see the end of until I'm about 150 years old I've had to hold off doing the boosted 355 I had originally planned to do (though I will be using the A9L rods out of the blank block I have), so instead of mothballing this engine (as was the original plan) on a pallet I'll give this one a tickle and freshen and run it for a bit.
