    HJ Sandman questions

just after a bit of info regarding a 253 , 4spd HJ Sandman i'm looking at buying.
Its a 4/75 model built in South oz so no XX7 on plates.
All numbers seem correct , tyre placard correct , engine date stamp 3/75 , full length roof lining , correct dash and steering wheel. but it doesnt have a console. it is a 4 spd so would be floor shift from factory, i can see a front console mount under the carpet but no rear one. also the door trims are non armrest type.
I was told that early HJ had plain door trims, could this be correct. the current owner has had it 26 years and says he believes it to be a genuine sandman.
    model HJ8WM70

    TIA Darren

chances are if he's had it 26 years and bought it as a sandman then it is. sandmans were worth nothing back then. look for evidence of the rear mount being removed. maybe they cut it off to aid in moving from front to back?

As Vombil said, only problem is lack of rear mount. That said if your satisfied headlining is original and has front mount for console (front mount could only be there for full console) then sounds the goods. No armrests are right for that era hj from what I know.

    Hi Darren.

HJ Sandmans in a panelvan were the only ones with a full roof lining in that model. If its an factory fitted one,, with the teeth at the rear entrance then it should be a HJ Sandman shell. The rooflining fitting was different to the way HX/HZ mounted them in their Sandman and Kingswood vans.

Thanks for the info. front console mount looks factory . and maybe the rear one was cut of when they fitted the bulky retro look car phone.
door trims were a concern as ive rear that all sandmans have the armrests, it also looks like its never had stripes, but a mate that bought one new in 75 said that his did not have armrests as he remembers swapping them over and he said the stripes were a dealer fit option as he also requested no stripes.

Armrests were an accessory on all Holden utes and vans in HJ except for later Sandman (added either 5/75 or 10/75 onwards, not sure which features manual revision it was added at). HJ Kingswood ute got armrests whether Sandman or not.

The stripes on a HQ and HJ were not factory fitted and supposedly came in the glovebox for the dealer to fit or not as the customer wished.

Base models in the HQ Belmont and HJ Holden Panelvan didn't have armrests as standard but were an option if ordered.

The front mount for a HJ is specific as well. The darker one not attached to the chunk of tunnel is a HJ. The other a HX/Z.
