Aussie Rules, officially the oldest football competition in the world! Woo Hoo!!!!!
But more seriously, some of the earlier comments ring true. I reckon the NRL has a battle on its hands to survive and promote its game and if it doesn't succeed, AFL and Soccer leagues will consume it.
Sorry lost my passion for league during the Super League era still keep a loose eye on it but not with any great passion might watch a bit of the State of Origin Games and maybe the GF , its basically only popular in the eastern states and and I wouldnt regard it as the number one game in either state QLD or NSW crowd numbers continue to fall and each year the game takes a hit of negative publicity in some shape or form, I am in no way a want to be Mexican but AFL has it all over the NRL just seem streets ahead more professional better run etc, though neither code can boast a true world cup or internationals , at best league could hold a strong tri-nations with the Poms and the Kiwis but anybody else is just filling in the numbers, I take an interest in most sports but would much prefer to watch the cricket or soccer English or A-League and as the recent Asian Cup showed there is plenty of interest and not just in the Socceroos and again with the cricket Melbourne got I think 80,000 people to a non Aussie fixture trying doing that with a league game.
And the sooker people wish they could get the TV ratings state of origin gets

There is no debate needed. All have their place and all have their issues. It's what your bought up on and what gets in your blood.
For me it's Rugby League, simply as that!
I doubt AFL and Soccer will overtake League as a TV spectacle. AFL is awful on TV hence why it gets lots of people to the grounds. Soccer is simply boring, I cannot understand how anyone can watch it, 90+ minutes for 1-0 and the news highlight is: one goal!
Having said all that League has been pi$$ing me off as a spectacle lately.
Maybe the UK darts is the go.

I'll have to agree with you Byron. AFL is good as a training exercise for league players as they are less likely to get hurt before a game and it does get them fit along with improving certain skills. Soccer just is the least for me. It attracts the wrong people from players to spectators.
It does sound like you have cranky old man syndrome Byron.
I pretty much lost interest in league when they brought in the interchange. It was better when forwards were slow and zippy backs could make great backline moves. Seems so regimented now. Hit up. Hit up. Times 5. Kick deep in the in goal for a try. Repeat for 80 minutes. Just my take on it though. I am sure everyone else likes it the way it is now.
