I reckon the biggest problem in the Newcastle area is the witching hours - those hours at the start and end of the school day. Roads are full of drivers that turn into morons - cut you off, jam on the brakes and change lanes, speed past you and cut in. It is the worst time to be on the road. I structure my work day to avoid them if possible. I reckon a lot of it is because people are allowed to send their kids to schools that aren't local to them, so kids have to be driven rather than walk or catch buses. There are 100's of kids going to "selective" schools 20min drive from where they live and no option other than drive them.
