    Another quality Rares product

    True engineering genius...

Provide poor quality rubber and plastic and then build it backwards... nice going. This image is of the Preslite.

The Lucas version is equally as embarrassing. It won't create vacuum and hold pressure my guess is that the reason is the cheap plastic instead of silicone rubber parts. What a F34kin waste of my time.

Does anyone know of a Lucas washer kit that works?

The quality is truely breathtaking. They certainly don't make them like they used to.

Last night I fitted my K frame back into the SLR. It took 4 goes to work it in but 1 time it came back out because the rear mounting rubbers that need to be pressed into the K frame have the wrong size metal sleeve fitted to the guts of the rubber. The centre sleeve had to be drilled out just over a millimetre!!!!! The original bolt was used. I measured the original rubber at a smidge over 11mm and the new ones at 10mm. (my vernier is metric) I don't have much time for Rare Spares any more.

I put the front crossmember back in one of my LX Torana's with Nolathane bushes and it went back in perfectly.

    I wouldn't use anything else....

Over the years, Ive had some parts from Rares that have worked well, perhaps with a little adjustment, but also some that were really not so good, particularly considering the prices. However, Im hesitant to put the boot in - what do restorers do when they need a rebuilt part without Rares? Well, find a new supplier of course, but, would that supplier have the experience especially if they are offshore... that said, Rares have been around long enough that they should have lifted their game, yeah I do think so for what they charge for some items.

That Preslite pump is difficult, they always have been. I remember an auto wrecker talking to me two decades back about my HJ and he said commenting on the Kingswood "very hard to fault", later in the conversation it came back to that washer pump.

I've rebuilt two out of parts of others, one worked for years, the other failed in a few months, motor still turns but the pump no go, (thats on one HX Sandy so I'll try agin when I'm closer to rego). But it is possible to make them work (for a short time at least) using old parts. But I think I have pretty much decided they were perhaps the standout poor component considering the rest of the vehicle (others may disagree of course). Its a very tiny diaphragm surface in a bulky unit, when it leaks it seems to me that water can get into the motor casing and sit in the lower bearing.

What we need is a brilliant new component with the same relibilty to power the wiper drive and a seperate small modern 12v motor for the screen pump all set inside a replica casing. And plug in - plug and play too!, Thats not that dificullt considering semiconductors etc these days. OK Rares...... go for it, try and keep RRP realistic, $350 aint gonna cut it.

Up until these new repro bit became available I had installed a remote 12v pump under my original washer bottle, pulled the rubber valves out of the valve plate of the original washer pump and left the hoses connected to the outer block. It made it look factory despite not operating the same way (ie, pulsing).

Voms, that Rares one wont seal as it has been put together backwards at the factory. Hopefully they don't have a complete batch put together like that...

The GT Shop in Melbourne. Same pump as the Holden (different outlets on the outer plate though).

Perhaps Holden shouldn't have given the rights to one company? Competition always makes for better products.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention. As Taily has mentioned it appears to be this latest batch. We are now having to rework all stock and replace existing stock. If Vombil sends me his address I will send a replacement one immediately. The material is top quality and not the issue as the first few batches were fully tested, approved and supplied. For a part like this there are not many companies prepared to invest in making it, let alone companies wanting to make small quantity runs. comparison.jpg
