No I didn't buy it new. Nor any of the other Ute's I've ever owned. But I 100% can tell you this one and others I have owned never had a tonneau fitted.
Yeah the bike was a XLV750R(F) - not mine. Just my Ute being used a community delivery truck (like they all end up doing!)

I also remember another I owned that only had rope rails (another accessory).

I reckon 50% of images you find on the net are without hooks. I'm not saying they all left the factory that way. But that makes a huge trade for getting rid of the ugly buggers.

It is an interesting question! My ute has them yet it was never selected as one of the original options on the paperwork (all of which we have).

Inners, those side strips look a fair bit "chunkier" than the narrow ones I've seen previosly on HJs. Pretty compelling evidence though that there would possibly be at least a 'delete' option on the hooks/tie downs.

If hooks were standard issue (which they weren't) the option E93 wouldn't exist, yet has made into all the genuine parts catalogs. Second to that; when you buy a new quarter panel the hook holes would be in place (punched not drilled). So when you go looking for a new old stock 1/4 panel you would expect hook holes?

All genuine Ute tailgates would all have hook holes?

I would say no to that as they are the same panel for ute and van. The holes would have been added later.

Fair call. I should have worded my post better as I didn't mean it to read that I was disagreeing with anyone, just making an observation with the original ordering paperwork (New Car Order form/options list) for my HJ that there was no mention of a tonneau being requested/ordered yet they were on the vehicle when it was delivered.

Just noticed I didn't finish the question I was half way through writing too (specs now on so I wont get out of sequence again), sorry about that. Those strips look a little thicker than ones I've seen previously on HJs, were they original?

Mine also had OEM Holden strips fitted (narrow ones), but on the non hanging panels they were fixed with a type of rivet that was fixed through drilled holes which I ended-up welding up and filing back.

Sorry about that, my minds a million miles away tonight.

I missed the question sorry Dave, no the stripes were aftermarket fitted by Mod Stripe in Wollongong who was a customer of mine. It's was the '80's!
As for the tonneaus and hooks. Mate, all I know is that I owned a few without them and what I read in front of me. E93 is there in black and white as an accessory. Just like N10 option for dual exhaust.

Barry could pull the inspection panel on his Ute and shoot a photo proving once and for all what his Ute is.

Anyhow, they are useless without a tonneau as you can't keep anything dry in the back and those flat clip on tonneaus are rubbish. They shrink in winter and won't fit and by design they leak. HQ -WB had a rope on tonneau and that's how they were.
I would take any recent photos with a grain of salt as far as evidence goes. New quarters and no tonneau cover holes. Like the WB Kingswood I have wrecked here. No vertical stainless trim clips on the B pillar on one side due to a quarter replacement.
