    308 block

Hey can some of my fellow sandmaners advise or share their know page on how far you can boar a 308 out to?
this one is 30+ but needs to go 60+ to get rid of some scuffing
Have they got anough meat to be safe?

I went through this a while back and I found the general opinion is that 60 thou is risky on 308 blocks, some survive, some don't. Is the wear on cylinder 8? This one seems notorious for accelerated wear. How about a sleeve?

Is it true that the earlier engines, e.g. HQ are thicker in the bores?

There's a thing that happens when casting a block called "Core shift". It's when the cores don't sit centrally in relation to the cylinder bore and can be a problem when reboring a motor. Some 308's had no issues, some went through the wall at 30 thou. A sleeve is an option if you do go through, but it needs to be done right. I've seen some bad ones that leaked water and had to be tossed.

Having said that, yours may be perfectly OK and you won't know until you try, so give it a go.

Early blocks do seem to be more reliable, but there were still issues with some, so it's not that they were thicker, just that they didn't have so many with Core Shift. Thicker cylinder walls means narrower water jackets and therefore higher temperatures, so that's not a good idea and that's why it wasn't done. Holden didn't give a crap about whether a block was able to be rebored, only that they worked properly while under warranty.

You can go 60+ no worries. A few years back a company released 80+Piston kits in a bid to reclaim the 308. Didn't hear how that went, my blown engine is 60+ and has never run hot at all. Also I have had a block that has had sleeves in it and worked fine. Every time we stripped it down we put a bottle of iron tight in the cooling system. Never had a problem.
