Haven't spotted it yet. Great that Vans are "finally" back in Street Machine I just hope it's just not "just" the Vans that they were going to publish back in '83
The scene has moved on a bit, as much as most are stuck in last century!

Got it, checked it out, love seeing plenty of van stuff again. I reckon there's something in Innuendo's comment above. Some of the feature vans are still in their original 70s/80s custom trim which is cool and not so cool.

Shag pile, studded crushed velvet and nipple girls fighting six legged beasts is definitely dated....but i think that's what SM wanted to give a tribute to. If the van scene makes a comeback with young people, then modern interpretations and styling's will get to be seen then.

Don't get me wrong I lived it, still live it and love it. But a mock/or real Sandman with hotwires and bathroom carpet are hardly something I need to see today as a feature article.
Imagine they released Street Machine with only cars built along 1984 Street Machining trends?

The issue is the people who are in charge of such things think '70's slap 'n' tickle or haven't moved past the '70's - '80's Vanning trends.
The crap "Fletch" served up on Classic Restos is a perfect example. If I was Dave Cooper I would have punched him in the face for the paint comment.
Even if it's true; you don't say something like that and put it to air.

I'm in the vanners like us section, so naturally I think they've done a great job.

I tend to agree, calling someone's car a paddock basher is a bit much.

I haven't picked up my copy yet, I hope to grab it Saturday morning when I'm in town, but I agree we need to move on from the old days of vanning while keeping a healthy respect for what has got us here now.
I sometimes look back through my old Vanwheels mags and think how we must have looked to the general public then. We thought we were cool (and I guess we were at the time), but we all grow up (unfortunately) and the van scene needs to too. I guess the whole custom car scene has moved a long way from what it was and how it was perceived back then.

    We treated women "differently".
    We drank and drove.
    We didn't wear seatbelts.
We drove around with a mob in the back.
We did wheelies (not burnouts, nobody did them) every time we dropped the clutch.
    And there's a lot more....

These things don't cut it now and neither do a lot of the custom touches applied to vans of the time. It's hard to draw the line though because everyone's taste is different.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

Yeah Rob that is so true.

I'm not against anybody who wants to build an '80's style custom Van as they were in the day. There are are some nice examples about and I respect that.
I just don't need to see feature articles on them. We all know what a basic Sandman looks like. We have Eddie Ford's Restored Cars or Classic Cars mag etc for that type of thing.
If I want to see old stuff I pick up one of my original Van wheels or CV&T magazines.
