Then there is the better versions again: HQ and HJ!
HQ and HJ Kingswood better??? One has the worst looking dashboard Holden made and they both handle like a something from America!
But they look better! And HJ gets a far superior engine. Yes they both suffer from inferior handling and tyre choice but today that is easily fixed. I agree the HQ dash is like a dropped pie, but that was fixed for HJ!
If I had my pick it'd be that exact HZ but in a HJ although if this HZ came up as a survivor i'd be tempted.
i think the market has changed. people are not paying a premium for a run of the mill optioned up kingswood. in my experience they never have. if it's not rare recognized ie sandman monaro etc then they are playing it safe looking for neat paint and good mechanical. books shmooks, one owner, factory v8 blah blah. they are just catch cries of yesteryear. you can add instruments, console, second hand 308 t400, lsd etc for an absolute fraction of the price and hassles of good panel and paint.
there have been so many really really neat HX HZ factory original v8 kingswoods (sedan, wagons which i believe have a larger appeal than commercials) for sale lately that cannot pull $10,000 because they need paint.

That is the appeal of them though, you can buy a really nice optioned up Kingswood ute for $15,000 essentially ready to use, or if you want to paint it probably $5k. You don't pay the stupid "rare" tax that people want to whack on today. To me a black L31 M41 and further optioned HJ-HZ Kingswood ute is a far superior and desirable vehicle to a 6cyl or 4.2L Sandman, and for the $5k purchase price it'd probably be far less rusty. Of course in the end people will still get a stiffy over a 6cyl vehicle because it once was a Sandman but there will always be others who appreciate the fully loaded non-Sandmans. I'm not talking 6cyl or even 4.2L Kingswoods, just the 5.0L versions. In my eyes a vehicle loses as much as 40% in its appeal (and hence I suppose value) if it is a 4.2L rather than a 5.0L.
Don't think anyone would disagree with that Vombil.
A nice Kingswood ute is still a nice thing though. Especially one with cool options like Tuxedo paint and 5 litre. Big set of Simmons or Dragway mags and it will stand out more than a DL7 HZ Sandman ute in Palais White any day. Much better value for money too.
That is one nice vehicle. Not all buyer's wanted a sandman.
