I agree that kids should be out of school younger if they are not academics. 18 is too old for first year apprentice for sure.

Wish I had done a trade. Biggest regret. Just lucky to get a start in mining at 40 with no trade or qualifications to speak of.

My young fella might be a bit young at 13 though. I tell them either get a trade or a degree. No future for farmers without some sort of off farm income for backup.

Being self employed since i was 23 years old and if i had my time again i wouldn't do a trade
its a hard job not only physically but mentally and when you break it all down no holiday pay no super no sick days do i need to go on
Building industry has got to shit in the last 15 years or so to many blow ins doing jobs cheap and under cutting
the real tradesman so we all got to take a pay cut because Mr Wong will do it cheaper
    end of rant

Yeah i know now im a Ceramic Tiler have been since i left school at 16
the Mr Wongs have infiltrated the Tiling and Gyprock industry thats the reason im getting out asap
im applying for jobs atm so they can have it all

Beachy the only reason the Mr Wongs dont do Plumbing its because you need 30 grands worth of tools
where they can go to Bunnings spend $500 on Tiling or Gyprock tools and there and instant tradie
    bloody shits me

Seems a few of us on here are chippies, me too. I recon the younger the better for an apprentice too. Bend them while they're green I say. Hey Valencia, plenty of work in Toowoomba for ceramic tilers. Come on over there is no money in working for a boss but some people are happy with that. The thing the pisses me off in the building game is people who class themselves as a tradesman but never successfully completed an apprenticeship. That's impossible.

Beachy, I was in Melbourne Saturday night and at about 10pm spotted Mr Wongs van totally covered in chook scratching that I could not read but it had a big "Plumber" down the side in english. One of the biggest Plumbing Company's in Sydney now is predominantly Chinese so dont count your chickens just yet, they are coming. Give it 10 years or so and they will show us all how to run a tight business Im tipping! Still, they are keen enough to get out there when most are having a beer on the couch so full credit to them.
