To remove or not to remove ID tags

    Hi Guys

As per above, what is the collective thought on removing tags as part of a full resto? I made the decision to remove the tags as it seemed silly not to when doing a complete off chassis, strip amd sand blast everytning resto.

    Whats the general consesus..............

I'm keeping mine on. I know you can get original rivets but it doesn't seem right for me.

I've removed mine and have photographed every step of the restoration process.

I left mine on, only because there was not much work needed on the plenum and the paint around them wasn't chipped or rusty, meaning that underneath those tags would be fairly pristine. I was able to get away with very carefully masking up the unpainted tags when I painted the ute. The one thing that stopped me removing the tags was just how easy they are to damage. I know you can get them remanufactured but I didn't want to go through that whole process, nor (if I ever sell it, my family bought it new in '75 and it has just always 'been there') I didn't want some knob saying to me that the ID of the vehicle was questionable - even if it isn't! I'm fairly lucky with mine as it still has the original donk, box and diff as it was delivered new with and I plan on keeping it that way.

There will always be someone who will seize on the rivets thing in an attempt to knock the price down. Just say to them that "I don't have to sell it to you mate"... Usually knocks them a little straighter.

Yeah on the the other end of the car you really should/can pull the chassis out and paint it. This also allows the body to go on a rotisserie. So removing the chassis is just the same as pulling the tags off isn't it?
It's more dodgy when tags are put back on with the wrong rivets or screws!
This is why survivor cars end up being more desirable than restored cars. All you have to do is find one....

    Point two....
I can't see an issue with re-shelling a van/ute if the body is beyond it. As long as it's made clear that's it's been done and not passed off as a original car. At least it's still around for people to enjoy.

I think I've said this before on another post but the paintshop that did mine removed the tags and gave them back to me for safe keeping. He does a few GT's Monaros etc and has known cases where shops have been broken into and only the tags taken!!!!!

What would be the value in having just the tags? Especially if they are stolen.

Not much, but would be devastating for the owner- can't imagine the pain. For sale genuine Sandman- no tags

Depends on the car. Higher end GT or GTS then you could add $20-30k to the value of a rusty shell witha set of highly desirable tags. Other times people steal them just for the hell of it.
