Thread: Penetrants

    Penetrants

Discussing this topic on another forum, thought it might help someone here as well.

Immediately before I use any penetrant, I use Wurth: Rost Off Ice.

    The Wurth site says:

"Shrinkage of sprayed parts quickly breaks open micro fine fissures allowing the lubricant to easily penetrate through the toughest rust".

CRC 5-56 has been my choice for years. I purchase by the 4 litre.

Just found this while trying to find KROIL over here in Australia.

This is a cut and past and is not mine, just borrowed from the web.
A bit dated, and from America, as we don't have some of the stuff listed.

    From here down

"The April/May 2007 edition of Machinist's Workshop (vol 20 number 2) did a test of penetrating oils where they measured the force required to loosen rusty test devices. Buy the issue if you want to see how they did the test. The results reported were interesting. The lower the number of pounds the better. Mighty interesting results for simple acetone and tranny fluid!

Penetrating oil . Average load .. Price per fluid ounce
    None ................. 516 pounds .
    WD-40 .............. 238 pounds .. $0.25
    PB Blaster ......... 214 pounds .. $0.35
    Liquid Wrench ... 127 pounds .. $0.21
    Kano Kroil ........ 106 pounds .. $0.75
    ATF-Acetone mix.. 53 pounds .. $0.10

    The ATF-Acetone mix was a 50/50 mix (1 to 1 ratio)."

Acetone is a bit pricey, but I have heard brake fluid and ATF work just as well.

"Penetrene" is pretty good. Give it two hits over 24 hours, only thing is the plastic bottle it comes in really only lets you apply it from the top down once it's about half empty (a small brush works though) . Harder to get now but Blackwoods still carried it last year when I bought the last bottle, $16 for 500 mills. But you don't use much. just a few drops and let it creep down the thread from the top.

I second CRC as a good product.
I use lots of never seize when putting stuff back together to try and avoid the problem. Also if you are doing water pipes with screw together fittings, an old product called Stockholm Tar is about as good as you can get to prevent seized threads.

Heat the threaded area up and then jam a candle on it. The wax makes into the threads and acts as a lubricant. An old bloke told me about this when I was an apprentice in the early 80's. His reasoning was any liquid penetrant burns off to quickly. Wax stays put.

x 2 for the candle wax, I've heard it works well.
