    Possible HZ Sandman (?)

    Hi All

New to the forum and the sandman world. I generally play with holdens a bit older than the 70s, typically FX-FJ. I came across this van by chance the other day. I am interested in looking to purchase it, if it is a sandman. I have taken some photos as shown below. The tag details are:

    Model HZ8W M 70
    Body No 399945-A
    Trim 1930-18V
    Paint 568-30521
    L31 M21 (hard to read) GV4

    HZ Panel van
    12/77
AHZ 08274S (with matching chassis number)
    GVM 2000
    Seating Cap 2

    8M70THH9412877

It is white but looks to have a grey colour underneath (?)
The body is very rough. Im not familiar with where these vans typically rust but apparently on this one its everywhere... The top gutter, the seams, sills, doors etc.
It has a hoodlining that runs all the way through to the tail gate.
Unfortunately they have misplaced the key so only got to look through the window.
It has a mod plate for a bench seat.

    A couple of questions:
    Is it a sandman?
Are the rivets on the tags correct/original? (they are different to the 1950s)
Are the side windows original? They look very similar in dimension to others I have seen photos of on this site and others.
The age old question of value..... While I would like to get it cheap, I dont want to steal it if they dont know what it is.. I realise this needs a ton of body work (Ive got an FJ van that is in similar condition). It does look like it has a few bits and pieces though not sure yet how much is ridgy didge (read novice).

Any help would be appreciated. Something with a bit more grunt than a standard old grey motor would be nice.

    Cheers, Andrew

Yeah it is definitely a Sandman. Despite the body condition looks to still have a lot of its original sandman equipment still fitted

It's a Sandman no problem there. The side panel glass is aftermarket and non original GMH.
It's factory colour is Palais White.

Nice find. Worth? Under 5K. Where exactly is up to your conscious.

Wrong mirrors but that's no defining thing.
Air con too. Everything points to the real thing.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

Nice find. Tag rivets look good, 18V interior, black door handles. Same month year and colour as my GTS.
Side windows look a bit bigger than most?

Worth? How good are your body skills? If you need to farm out any work on that then probably worth walking away from and buying one already done. Will end up cheaper.
It would likely sell for $5k or so on eBay with the right description. The individual parts are probably worth more than the car as a whole in reality.

Wow poor old girl. If you found a windowless shell maybe worth it. Like playwme said it would have lots of original sandman bits even has the GTS wheels on her. Deffo a sandman by the tags. Good luck if you decide to restore and put up pics to show us

    Yep, genuine HZ Sandman....

worth??? Let's break it down in parts.

yellow needle GTS dash.. Complete.. $1000
Black HZ GTS steering wheel........... $400
    308 engine cond. unknown.............. $1000
    M21 gearbox cond. unknown........... $400
    quad headlight front....................... $300
    salisbury diff ................................ $200
    GTS rims x four............................. $400
HZ chassis and Sandman tags......... $1000 to $2000

I reckon a fair price is around the $3500 to $4500 for the car as is.

A lot of work to bring her back life and really only worth it if you have the skills yourself, a shed to do it in and the time to do it. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Thanks all for the info and help.

I actually forgot to write the engine number down so will get that when I go back.

Unfortunately I am all too aware of what car restorations cost, particularly ones that need a lot of body work. I once got a quote for panel and paint for $42k for an early model ute that really wasnt that bad. In their defence they did say they would do a good job.... A complete well done car at the time could be picked up for around $30k. Poor condition doesnt stop me being starry eyed when looking though!

I thought apart buying it for parts but generally dont like parting out vehicles that are reasonably original and complete.

Will let you know how I go.

    Cheers, Andrew
