Tailgate not locking?, is this correct

    Hi all,

My key will only turn 1/4 of the way, if I remove the lock mechanism I can See it rotate and the locking pin move from one side to the other. When assembled back on the car I can see that the pin can only travel to one side?

    Am i Missing something ?

    Thanks for your thoughts

You may find that it is closing but the mechanism is not completely sliding the whole way across on the locks give it a good oil or grease and give the tail gate a good push when closed if those locks don't slide home the lock won't work and will be as you discribed

    Hi Beachy,

I have also tried it with the tailgate open, which would simulate the mechanism completely sliding the whole way?.

Is the set up right compared to others ?

I've had the same issue and it was the mechanism that bolts to the tailgate. The washer/retainer bit wears and the handle pulls through too far, blocking the square pin.
Loosen the handle nut and pull the handle back out a bit to see if that helps.
The mechanism is available from Rare Spares.
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!

Have you tried flipping the base plate around so the cut out for the locking tab is on the other side?

    Hi Sandaro,

I tried reversing it, didn't seem to make any difference, from what I can see now I need to pack out the plates with some washers to align in the right position?

Put the plate on with the locking pin in place (in slot) I.E: locked.
Tighten without allowing the pin to side out of place. Test function as you apply tension (tightening).
