    Wheel bearings. The bearing retaining plate is the only thing holding the axle into the diff center.

    Exactly, but if bearing separates from axle or flogged out (which sounds like the problem) axle, drum and wheel could just slip right out of diff and you'll be a 3 wheeler!

    Will be the bearring retainer it should be leaking oil

    yes, leaking oil. Diff is out of car. I will do a pair of bearings before I use it. thanks guys
