Not sure about the 'correct' colour, but I have just cleaned mine up. I was yellow originally but with a few more careful layers should be ok to convert from white.
I used a Humbrol Lemon Yellow #99 - got it from a hobby shop.
The paint is very thin so make sure you don't apply too much to your brush.
I used business cards to gently wedge behind the needles to get them away from the black resting posts and to be a bit of a dropsheet
