Figured out my Quadrajet secondary issue today

Ok, so today was one of those days where i couldn't figure out what to do and finally landed on tinkering with the quadrajet secondaries on my Tonner. They haven't been working and i wanted the power back. So i peeled off the gas mixer and sure enough, the upper doors were really tight, I could force them open with my hand but no chance they were being pulled open by vacuum. So i pondered the options, mechanic, new carb, fuel injection kit and decided on option four...rip the carb off and play with it myself.

Got it on the bench, pulled the secondary barn doors off the shaft and started tinkering. The shaft was binding badly on the housing so i pulled it out and checked everything out much closer. Took me a while to figure out what was happening...the center area of the upper housing of the carby was warped! Kind of concave shaped. So pondered again and decided to really throw caution to the wind and just drill out some extra clearance for the shaft. Ended up working a treat with the barn doors opening nicely under light finger pressure and the test run was mostly rewarding (blew a coolant hose off at around 6000 rpm...

    As always, pics below

Wrapping happens when the carby has been tightened up to much on the bolts
    Had this before as well
Thanks for the pictures and reminder

    Cheers Kiwivan

Thanks Kiwivan. Yeah, that's what i figured after noting the bending seemed centered on the air cleaner bolt hole. It was a very 'bush mechanics' job to get around the issue but it worked so quite chuffed. Cheers
