I know of two that were local and both in country towns of less than 800. One of which was Kandos that had a Holden dealer. That HQ Sandman was a sparkies van.
As mentioned above, by maxsandman, lots of people would have bought HQ, HJ and HZ Sandmans secondhand and never even known what they were. The same goes for Joe Blow looking at them in car yards and car shows. Without detailed knowledge of tags, owners delivery papers etc, you have no way of knowing even today. Plus no one would have cared what they started out as in the 70’s.
No one knows but it’s obvious if they only sold a handful they would have discontinued them. Plus the stripes clearly were not a big selling point as only one series(HX) actually had them fitted standard. The rest were all optional either through DL7 or just leaving them in the glovebox.
Memories and recollections are unreliable and also influenced by what you were actually interested in at the time. With no actual numbers from Holden no one knows.

I was thinking this thread should be split, so we can keep an eye on the beautiful green HQ van. What do you guys think?

Also, cos I think the conversation about numbers of HQs built will be ongoing, AND should be, with everyone putting their 2 cents forward

    cheers
    Max

also this site will be on fire when the Green van guy gets his money!

-Thanks for the comments - certainly a lot of passion out there.

I bought the chrome yellow van new Mid January so one of the very first to hit the road. Two years touring and if my memory serves me correctly I didn't see many other HQ Sandman's.
But I remember the HJ's coming on stream in numbers (that's my two cents worth)

Anyway it would be nice if the recorded proven van numbers were made available to the forum - at least that way it is a benchmark to start with.

HQ Barbados green is coming along slowly (refer to aerial shot attached) - more pictures up soon.

    Cheers,
    Robin

Hey Robbo_NZ , when you bought yours new, was it floor stock or did you order it specifically? If it was floor stock I guess the stickers were already on it?

I remember reading that Byron had about 110 hq sandmans recorded (utes and vans presumably). I take it that is ones Byron has been provided numbers for or come across. So for him to have that many I expect there are many more out there, but I would still hesitate to think it would be over a thousand.

My Dad has a big collection of Wheels, motor manual, modern motor from the era, most months and none of his had any model announcement or stories on release of new hq sandman, bit of a low key release, maybe with hj only 9 or 10 months away really just had to get the toe in the water in what was clearly becoming a bit niche in the market

You see the mods were happening from new. GTS badges, Bonnet Scoop, Mag Whels, Curtains and Bull bar etc.
Great to see the images of your new HQ Sandman. Really looking forward to the updates on your Barbados sandy.

Wow! 110 HQ Sandman's on his list. I wouldn't have thought he would have that many. I had trouble getting that many on my V-Series registrar.
If that is corrrect I'd like to know the numbers on the list of HJ etc to make the comparison.

I found were I referenced that number from, it was a post from Byron on fastlane 11 months ago, actually he said 107 hq sandmans or probables. I can't link but back in 2012 on this site, topic called 'database update' Byron then had 47 hqs also said the numbers of other models in that post too. I wonder if being consultant to hhs he is coming across more in the years since?

107 recorded 44 years after they were built. I am sticking to my estimate of at least 1000 built. 10% survival of all built would not be an unreasonable estimate.

I bought the van from Suttons Arncliffe, the salesman said it was the first one they had, so they wanted to add a few extras, the stripes, cassette radio, centre aerial, chrome strip on bonnet, driving lights, drivers door windshield, fuel filler spill cover, mudflaps. Everything else was fitted by me, as you do when you're 20 years old.
