What would you suggest would be a possible survival percentage of a 44 year old car, that was extremely susceptible to rust, went through twenty five years of its life where it had no value, except to be wrecked to build other cars? I reckon 10% is pretty optimistic really.

That was 107 probables (vans and Utes) so not 100% survival rate....
I like how people just make up stats like a 90% attrition rate or my old man worked at holden and I remember loads on the lot 44 years ago when I was a kid at one particular dealership and extrapolate a stat from that.
The Mysandman website and a lot of other publications say only 100 rumoured to be built so I’m sticking with that.
Of course I would because I have a vested interest. Guess we will never know.
Anyway, the van is no longer on carsales. I wonder if it sold and when it will pop up again. ��

And the big killer of a car model is when the teenagers get hold of them....
Vans were THE teen choice of the 70's so were doomed to a high attrition rate. Couple that with the fact that when a new model comes out the old devalues fast and the customising scene was at it's peak, sending even more vans down the one way path to hell.
Cheap, used V8 vans (possibly Sandmans) fell into the hands of P platers and inexperienced drivers and were written off at a high rate...
I'd be shocked if 10% survived in any decent condition today.

The mysandman website has always stated there was no record of numbers built, not probably 100. There is no doubt that a HQ Sandman is a rare car in 2018. No one is disputing that, and that will keep their value high.

The database record of 107 (or whatever it is) is just any plate that has been confirmed as a Sandman both Ute's and Van's.
Of that maybe 25% of these today are complete drivable vehicles.

Yes four door Monaro were being sold to family guys but the V8 utes and vans were the new hot thing by HJ . I’ve got a HQ 308 Sandman van and there’s another locally,both aren’t on any register. 100 hq sandman’s seems unlikely

Yep I agree with you. I do wonder how many have been added to the database since www.holdenhistoricalservices.com.au has been offering up certificates or conformation for owners and buyers?

To add to the HQ Sandman mystique, they were never sold new in New Zealand. I have imported 2. Don't know of any others. Maybe Kiwivan or others can help.
Was South Africa ever a export market for them?

G'day Hainzy,

Your van's build thread was one of the first I read from start to finish when I joined up. Cool Van, one of my favs on here. I have a Caribbean Turquoise HZ sedan 253/4speed real low. that was my cruiser through the 90s & last rego sticker is 03, its parked up, waiting for me to strip my VN 5L 5 speed & throw in. as too many cars, jobs, homes & not enough time.

Anyway, back to yes I remember 2 Turquoise HZ vans getting around here, probably 1980 - 85. One was owned by a bloke Stewie and the other one Kym. When I read your build, I couldn't work out if it was one of these or another. Did you have any names or old rego number?

Cheers Max. No I don't know any more about it mate sorry. I bought it from Craig who you might know. He lives outside Tamworth in a small town (the name escapes me..) and he is a collector/wrecker/restorer of HT/K/G monaros. he had about 15 there when I got the van plus a basketball court sized shed of spare parts and cuts from wrecked out cars. Amazing collection!
