Thread: Matching Numbers.

    Matching Numbers.

Hi there question about Holden HJ-HZ matching numbers.

I know with Ford XA XB XC matching numbers are: Engine, chasis and compliance plate are all the one and the same number.

Is this the case with our Holdens? (I cannot check, not original motor).

I hear people speak of matching numbers when selling their Holden.

So is that same number on the engine, chasis and compliance plate or a part of the number the same. For example the last four digits to identify a vehicle.

    Thanks.

    Good question ..
Now from what I know. .
The compliance have the size of the motor on them ...
The motor has a built date on the block and the engine numbers have to roughly coincide with the compliance plates year of manufacturing. ..
There is no engine number on the compliance plates to say that motor come out that car. ..
I think the only way is to have the original sale document that has the order template of the vehicle that has everything the vehicle is and has on it.
In a nut shell is this correct ?

Pj350 is right that to confirm matching to original paperwork/holden records is the only way to be sure. Holden were not like Ford where everything had the same number on them. Date codes on components can give you an indicator ie if an engine is dated after the car or L32 on plates but 308 in the engine bay then it is not the original.

Holden Historical Services can confirm for $90

    pj350 and Sandaro, Valencia:

Very well explained and I now have an idea of the Holden I.D system.

The chassis number is listed on the compliance plates, and of course the plates have things that match them up as well. I’ve got Hq’s with a stamped body number but it doesn’t correspond to anything, and of course the engine number doesn’t correspond with any other numbers either. A HHS report will likely give you the original engine number, although not all records are complete.

People like to advertise their old holden as 'matching numbers' but as stated above it usually means in a casual way, 'All tags are there and the tags match the chassis, and Im pretty sure its the original engine'..

The only way it can be 100% matching numbers is if the original owners manual is still with the car and it has the engine number in it which matches the engine. Or if you get a HHS report...

Yeah as stated, the only thing the numbers match is the owners book, which might not have even had the numbers written in it correctly. My WB was registered with a typo in the engine number for 25 years.
I am fairly sure that some of the vehicles that had bodies and assembly in seperate plants, had numbers on tags and chassis that are not in line.
Then to make it even more ridiculous, people are fitting date coded blocks that have completely incorrect engine numbers, that people are gong to think are original engines in years to come.
