The ignition barrel locks in with a depress preloaded metal tab. With the steering wheel off and indicator switch removed you will see a slot that a flat blade screwdriver can be placed to depress the metal retaining tab. If the tab is not in place correctly the barrel will float about in the hole. From memory the key position should be in accessories position to be able to depress correctly and then whilst depressed turn the key to start and remove in a pulling/twisting motion.

My steering wheel is of. Can I remove the indicator switching gear and then assess the ignition barrel without removing the steering column?

Yes, the slot for the depress is in the upper honey pot positioned near where you would visualise the barrel is internally. Sometimes there is still a very thin layer of die cast if it has never been removed before. Just push the flat blade through it.

Innuendo you were spot on. I got the nice shiny barrel out and what a heap of crap it is. I compared it with a genuine barrel, it's tight and built like a tank. I'm sure the other was a knock of. Anyway the geniune stainless steel replacement fits like a glove. I appreciate your help.
