You can replace the console at anytime. I wouldn't be stressed about it at this stage. Just keep an eye out for the correct console and replace whenever.

Yeah, the right one might come along during your build.

I just had a quick look around, & out of 12 consoles, I only have 3 with ashtrays, or the hole to fit an ashtray. so in my case, sedan consoles are rarer.

Just a quick question for the hard of memory, what's the easiest way to tell the difference between HJ/Z & LH-X Torana consoles?

    Cheers

    I might be wrong ....
Hq .hj .Lh had the lift up lid /little compartment up forward of gearsifter a smaller boot round the shifter... hq different armrest if it even got one....hx.hz.lx did not have the lift up lid compartment
just a tray / money slot rack and a bigger boot round shifter ...?

True but i think the bottom of the Torana consoles have a different profile because of the floor pan

    Thanks pj & valencia
That sounds right, they are different along the bottom where they sit on the floor, either the sides or right at the front. I'm not sure the quickest way to tell. I also remember some torana had a wider bit at the front, but not all& dont know why it was like that
