Howdy. I'm replacing the 253/trimatic in my HJ van with an HJ era statesman 308/TH400 and was wondering what speedo drive gear these came from the factory with. I'm thinking it may be the 17 tooth red gear but not sure this would be used with both the 3.08 and 2.78 diff options. Can anybody confirm?

If you are leaving the diff ratio as it was originally in your van then the gear drive that was fitted in it (with the trimatic) will be the right one.
That's the thing. The driven gear is broken and I have to order a new gear. I'm also worried about the drive gear. As you said, I will just replace the gears with what was originally supplied as the diff is untouched. BTW which end of the van would I lift to work on the rear of the trans?

You will jack the rear of the car to change the gears and retain transmission fluid.
