i have a couple of sets of gts rims hangin around for my own use so i figured i would get them sandblasted and paint them up..i have one set of 14x7 and one set of 15x7 which i am mixing to use 14x7 on front and 15x7 on rear...the first set i have painted is in the traditional grey centre silver outer but the second set i will be doing in reverse colours for something different..
firstly before i get into descriptions of masking etc lets look at what this is costing me..
the 15 inch rims ive had for 10 years and they cost me then $100 each..
the 14x7 rims i bought recently and paid $100 each..
so $800 for 8 rims..
sandblasting was $15 a rim...$120.
i bought 4 litres of gts silver and 4 litres of gts grey which was $350 for the 8 litres,a bit more than needed to do 8 rims but its always good to have to much than not enough..
fineline tape 3 rolls $30..again extra tape for later..
time taken too prime/hifill and rub down ready for paint and then paint silver 4 hours..
time taken to mask up centres and paint about 2.5 hours..
the process for painting gts rims is quite simple as long as you are a patient person..
sandblast or rub down,primer/hifill..then rub down nice and smooth..then paint the whole rim in the silver and let the paint cure a bit before using the fineline tape to mask out your insert..then use masking tape to fill in the areas you dont want to be painted the dark grey..use a razor on the tape to cut the masking tape..mask up the rest of the rim and paint in the darker colour and then demask...the use of fineline tape gives you a nice sharp edge on the colour and also does not allow the paint to stick to it so when you demask the paint stays on the wheel on not on the tape..
