All stripes and logos on HQ and HJ were dealer fitted (this is well documented - see attached cut and paste from HQ POA, HJ is the same).

However HX and HZ are not so clear. In fact it is quite adamant on the colour/trim chart that the stripe combo required must be specified or DL7 optioned. However I have reports from people who tried to buy HX and HZ Sandmans new, that they could have a DL7 straight away or had to wait a while (like a week or two) for one with stripes. This either means that the dealers had to get the stripes fitted or thee were a lot of DL7's around (this makes no sense as a dealer could easily have got a DL7 and fitted the stripes himself?).

DL7 would have been easier to sell towards the end? They must have been selling less and less of the striped ones towards the end or they would not have dropped them in WB. I bet most sandmans being restored were DL7 as dealers could have had them as floor stock and being fully loaded they would have been easy to sell. My brother looked at a new HZ ute with GTS dash 5 litre and bucket seats but bought a XD Falcon ute instead with a 6 cylinder because of the fuel crisis (what a mistake, he would still have had it now). I bet it was a DL7 and there was no way he is the sort of person to buy a car that stands out too much! If it was a DL7 sandman they sure never told him.
I reckon that there would have been more DL7 than striped Sandmans in HX and HZ. What was the difference in price between a DL7 to a Kingswood with all the same options? If they were cheaper it would have made sense to have been flogging them instead of the Kingswood ute. Plus it would have been way easier to tick the DL7 sandman van box than go through all the optioning up of a standard van. If the salesman was lazy then they would not have even told the customer that hated sandmans that they had just bought one.

To help confuse everyone. This one had white stripes. It was on a 100% original HJ Sadnman. Note the black in the logo.........

@Stickthis. You sure it's black? On my Sandman the outline is made to match the colour of the car. To me, the colour in the logo is the same colour as the Sandman. Please note the picture.

The standard colour stripe on 1898 was white, and from the info I have collected there was no option code to go back to black (but you could option white if black was standard). However as the stripes were dealer fitted it wouldn't have been hard to put black on.

Corect mate. All NOS kits of white sandman stripes are body colour where the black is on the logo I posted up. I believe that the white without the black in the logo is correct. But its always stumbled me why this one I posted is black. I was told by the owner that it was original. But I guess you have to wonder if its correct or not.
