Don't forget about the "4th" HDT rally car, taken over by HDT in Darwin after drivers had a blue. It is still kicking around Newcastle area.

if the van was not a sandman to start with then it would not have had the tell tale blackouts around the doors and also would not have had the black screen mouldings etc...the nose just tops it off...the story told by one of the nowaki brothers at the toranafest bbq was that this van pictured was john shepards personal van that was hijacked...:knockout:
gts mirrors would have been shit on dirt roads as in drooping so that may explain the standard mirror..

I saw an article in Australian Muscle car a few months ago on these vans and the Round Australia trial. The poor old Ford factory team only had transit vans and could not keep up with the V8 vans!
J rego plates were around in 77 as we bought a Hilux new and it had JFK plates and was purchased in Mudgee so the plates would have been hanging around for a while then being a country backwater.
They did have more than one according to AMC.

One of the van's was John Sheppard's van. The story goes that Bruce Nowacki & Darryl Bromley where using John Sheppard's race team van to follow the trial till Adelaide and then where surposed to return to Melbourne. Somehow they found an excuse to keep on following the trial all the way round although they did hit a horse in outback Queensland and John Sheppard was none to pleased with the state of the van.
In the AMC article wbute mentions there is a picture of two Marlboro livery vans in front of a plane. I suspect the one on the right is the John Shepard's race team van from Victoria and the one on the left is the rally team van that was owned by George Shepheard who ran the HDT rally team out of Sydney. Needless to say Ford Transit vans would of been no match for Holden vans!
Love to know the where about of the 4th HDT car that is still in the Newcastle area. According to the blokes in the rally scene there are only 3 of the 18 specially built Commodores in existence today. One being the Brock/Phillip/Richards winning car that is owned by Holden still, the second being the Bell/Ferguson/Boddy 2nd place car that Barry Ferguson bought back and restored in 2008 and 3rd being one of the private entrant cars that is still campaigned in selected events by a couple of blokes from Victoria.

I'll find the name of the guy who has it now. A friend of mine had it for years, and it was still as raced with the cage, mudflaps etc on it with the race driveline in it (low comp XU-1 spec 202). I have the names of the drivers at home. I could have bought it a few years back if I had wanted to, but it was of little interest to me.

I have writen down that Mason, Hicks and Morley drove the car I knew of. Two of them had a blue in the NT and HDT took over the car from there.

Car 88 Kevin Mason - Les Hicks are names on the entry list. If the car came from the Newcastle area I am going to have a guess that nav's name was Phil or Bruce Morley. Would love to speak to the people who own it now!
