I currently drive a HQ Ute as my daily (253 / 4 speed) which i'm looking for some clarification on it's potential to be a Sandman or not (i don't believe it is but keep reading different articles which may suggest it could be)

Here's the ute to start with as i know everyone loves pictures...

and the 600 Holley set up for Gas on the 253 (which is installed and been running for atleast 6 months

now i don't have the numbers / tag pictures on me, but remember most the details...

    It's a 74, Kingswood Ute
    Aquamarine Metallic
    2 Seating Capacity
    253 / 4 speed
A few of the bolt on bit's and hopefully about to get the rest
Trim is 30E, now i know most say this should be 30B but i did read somewhere they since it's a kingswood most of the time whether it had a bench or buckets it's was marked 'E' regardless (on the monaro parts website, i know that the internet lies hence why i'm asking...and also why i believe it isn's a Sandman)
Now it's doesnt have XX7 on the tag but i'm led to believe this is only if built in Brisbane correct?

Any help would be appreciated guys... i'm not worried either way it won't changed what i do or how i drive it... just curiosity i guess, hopefully doing some rust soon and dust coat, some sandy strips and then the GTS rims can go on... the sides strips are already gone

    Cheers

Hi Nathan, just been reading your info on the beautiful ute you have. In reference to your trim 30E.(including 30G and 30H) it is all black, but there was a neutral option for Doeskin Headlining and Sun Visors. (this could be the 30G and 30H options, not sure). From all of this your interior then looks very original. Have you been able to determine if it is a genuine Sandman or not.

    regards Graham

30E is black in Kingswood, bench or buckets. 30A (bench) and 30B (buckets) are Belmont only and black.

    I've only ever found them so far in B (3 x codes), E (3 x codes) and 38J. There are another 2 x B codes and 3 x E codes possible.

According to the Trim list I have for Kingswoods there is a possible 25 combinations, so could we assume that a Kingswood Sandman could actually have anyone of these combinations? 38Kcould be another option (with the Raydo insert) (same as 38J) but hightly unlikely that it would have been ordered in a ute.

The same goes for the 30E, the 30G and 30H could have been ordered in a Kingswood, G being the Nylon insert and H being the Black /Whire Raydo insert.

Happy to supply a copy of the list. didn't want to post it up as I thought I may infringe copyright.

Kingswood sedan and wagon only for most of those. NEVER trust a parts catalogue....

HQ Commercial (ute and van) are only:

    Belmont - Black, Red, Blue, Grey or Brown (30B, 32B, 34B, 35B or 39B).

Kingswood - Black, Cinnabar, Indigo, Ash, Juniper, Doeskin, Doeskin/Black and Chestnut (same codes as Belmont except B replaced by E, 36 plus 38 added and Doeskin/Black is 38J (normal Doeskin 38E)).

Sandman may possibly have been a subset of those and this may explain why I have some missing despite having every available HQ Sandman paint colour recorded

No all good, thanks for that, still must have been a nightmare with all the colour combinations available for customers.

either way it is still a great ute, my thoughts, keep it original, if you have to modify it, do it in a way that is easily revisible.

As it is it will be much admired by people who know there utes.

A mechanic I employed here in SA stored a pretty straight HJ ute in our workshop, almost weekly people would enquire if it was for sale, so my tip is the value will soar within the next 4-5 years as Monaro's etc have gone beyond the reach of the average punter. I looked for 18 months for a HQ ute, especially one i felt was right to be a project.

    Cheers Graham

I'm possibly looking for a single headlight front end, but would required nose cone and support panel, i think all other accessories are available repo? I'm in Perth so let us know whats available...

I've been thinking of getting some one to cut the rust, minor works, possible cut in flutes and a top coat / respray the HQ ute as i dont think im going to get time to do it any time soon and should hopefully get it through a few more years before a rebuild comes possible... can anyone in Perth recommend anyone thats reasonable? it doesnt have to be show quality, but done correctly (i do realise the potential costs)

    Cheers
    Nathan
