Power steering has shorter arms. I think that very early on they may have used shorter arms in manual boxes too. If you use the long arms on power steering(I haven't swapped mine over on my we power steering conversion yet) you have a huge turning circle.

fast ratio steering was available as an option on manual steering, were shorter arms used for this or was it a different worm drive in the column.

The fast ratio manual steering option had the GTS 16:1 box which had a different worm.
