    Gas struts I feel are fine on a custom/mild custom but personally I don't like them on genuine restored Sandmans.
    As for usability; the gas strut has it all over the mechanical version. So long as they are the correct pressure and mounted to allow proper opening.
    They paint up nice also. Unlike the original units.
