    Going too far!

A mate of a mate of mine is one anal mofo when it comes to cars. He's been a mechanic for 25 years and had been out of the project/toy car thing for a long time. About 12 months ago he started looking for a project or good original to tart up with a gnarly motor and drive the wheels off. Anyways after 4 failed trips to the east from WA to look at cars he finally found one in Vic or NSW that fit the bill. HX kinga sedan in manderin with a $55,000 paint job done in a Ford GT resto shop over there. The thing was rolled onto a truck (not a runner) and was trucked to perth for the princely sum of circa $25-$27K landed (previous owner spent around $80k total). So the work starts on this car. Which diff, motor, gearbox combo? which wheels - 80's fats or sleeper stockies and the dramas and indecision goes on. All work is carried out wearing gloves; yes even on the under carriage etc.

Then just the other day, so close to the end... a light bulb moment!

He realises that he's spent too much. $15k motor, 5k tranny, 5k diff plus other items like GTS gear, wiring, accessories etc and all of a sudden it'll owe him $55-65k once licensed. It's too good for what was the intended use - weekender that will be thrown into a donut or the like at the drop of a hat. Anyway he's in a real bind as to where to go with it....

Got me thinking. Has anyone else been in a similar situation or have a similar story?

Seen it happen plenty of times, hence why you always see me championing buying a completed car, as once you start rebuilding you quickly realise what it is going to cost you.

I'm going through this. Not really with too much spent, just funds distributed where they're not really needed. All of a sudden I find myself looking into buying a house and a work van, and have toys scattered about that I don't need. The idea always seems better at the time I guess.
