295/50/15 is a fat tyre and not likely to fit under a stock wheel well/arch especially if sitting a lower ride height. That said, it is the size I would go for but it would need modification to get the desired ride and look.

Really a 295 should be on a minimum of a 10" wide rim, any narrower you will have excess tyre sidewall bag and this will effect handling. I think you might be better suited to 265/50/15 or 275/50/15 on these narrower rims. Really a 245 is about right for a 8/8.5" rim. But a little extra bag does help with reducing gutter rim rash.

You won't need the power steering, just steer with the throttle.

Worst case scenario I'll come and drive it to shows for you. You might want to negotiate a bulk deal on those tyres though.

We spent two weeks looking for a 275/50/15 the only ones available are drag racing tyres with very little tread for dot legal in USA but suspect not the legal in Australia. 275/69/15 at 28inch diameter will fit but in my opinion after testing two big in diameter and too much rubber from side view. Play we don't think it will rub as felt all around the guard and there is room. The 295 on a ten inch rim, which I tested with a 5 inch backseat, has no chance of fitting the 295 on a 8.5inch rim with 5 inch backset will fit perfectly, but may have to pack chassis bumper stop 10-15 mm at worst
Note guard returns have already been folded up to inner guard during restoration. Jennie wrote this RB said this

    I run a 255/60-15 on a 8 1/2. Inch rim lowered 1 1/2 with a 5 inch back space,And have had no issues
with tyres rubbing even loaded with crap going away.
I now wish that I had bought a wider rim and tyre, But the perfect back would be 4 1/2 to 4 3/4 .
It would give a little more room to the rear springs.
5 inch back space on the front is a 1/4 inch too deep , it will hit the tie rod.
M/T do a sportsman s/t which is a normal radial(not drag) which is priced better than the T/A's and just as good if not better in the wet.

Jennie if Cherone can drive mine WITH OUT POWER STEERING old age is creeping up or he just getting soft...

Clear it up for me Jennie. What size is the rim?

I assumed 8.5" and a 295/50/15 is too wide for the rim for two reasons 1. Excess sidewall bag 2. Illegal
I'm all for large wide rims and tyres I just wanted to point out the issues. I remember now you are going to run side pipes so the Van will not be low anyway.

The tyre is 295mm of road surface. A 8 1/2" rim is 216mm so your looking at 40mm 1 9/16" of bag either side. The 50 profile is 50% of the road surface width.

If you have a 10" rim on the rear for the 295/50/15 them there is nothing wrong with the combination (other than clearance issues.)

Back in the old Vanning days 265/50/14 or 265/50/15 were the rage. Yet most of the softies ran 235/60/14 all round. Just about any Van running 295/50/15 had flares and were running 10" rims. Think Wizard, Assassin, Street Legal, Chaser etc.

I've got a pair of 8.5" US racers at home with 275/60/15 on them - they look like 4x4 tyres! I had them on a tonner and they are massive. You'd be looking for a 4.11 diff with these and a 5spd.
