Thank you for the advice everyone. I cannot relocate so either a job at Roxby as a local or a fifo based from Adelaide is a priority.

I can imagine some work can be monotonous but every job has its good and bad points whatever way you look at it. Kel and I are looking at this a a 12 month initial commitment and then see what goes from there.
Manual skills are minimal... 10 years since I drove a container forklift, but I can taxi an F18 to the flight line hahah!

Should I be looking at pre employment training in a given area or should I just go in with the current skill set and hope for the best?

To me, it really depend's on what work area you want to be in Blocker. You have an incredible amount of skill's already, with which you should achieve employment. I would use those to gain employment, and then transfer to whatever area suit's you better.

    Cheers.

My daughters boyfriend has just done 3 months at Roxby (Olympic Dam) he stayed in accomodation on site, he was doing paid work experience as part of his Uni degree (Chemical Engineering) why I am telling you this is that the flying in and out is hellishly expensive, and seats not always available...It is a 7 hour drive from Adelaide. sorry to rain on your parade....

I know Roxby pretty well - been there plenty of times. I've been looking into certification today namely a Conduct Haul Truck ticket. Did the usual phone around at recruiters... but all need experience.

    Anyway long journey and interesting.

it sux that they all want 1-2years experience when I was made redundant my company gave me a minesite job and trained me on 200ton haul trucks and took less than a week including inductions. the following week I was on my regular shift working days/nights as normal. It is boring as batshit. I see Absinth wrote about 4-6 weeks on rosters these are pretty well gone in WA apart from a few construction jobs 2 and 1 would be the most common roster but 8 days and 6 off is becoming more common too. OHS jobs are plentiful and pay big $$$ with the right certification.

I made a few calls today to WA and QLD, and although I am OH&S and HSE certified up the clacker I've had no minesite experience. So the plan might be to do some short term 3 month contract as anything and build up from there.

One thing I found was it did not matter what your resume says, fronting up in person to a recruitment agency is the best way to get anywhere. Had my resume in for 3 months and got no where. Walked in the door of their office and had a interview the next day. They deal with a lot of tyre kickers so to speak.
