Slightly off topic but related to the question.
I bought my HQ ute off ebay and it wasn't till I was doing a revs check a few days earlier that the guys Dad informed me that the original chassis was rusted out so they put the body on a HX chassis. They had photo's to back it up. In an attempt to make me feel better, the guys mum tells me that it is all above board as she works for the RTA.
I check with the RTA before I bought it and they said that is was all good as the chassis number was on the rego papers. I don't dare let my ute run out of rego.
What do you guys think?
Pretty rare for a sandman to weather the storm of 30odd years of general use without a chassis or body swap when you consider my buddy who bought vz s pack gen 3 one tonner as a repaired wreck with 600 Kms on the clock and then he wrecked it at 10,000 and then some shadey dudes gave it life again (not sure how coz engine was nearly sitting in the cabin). So we are up to its 3rd life in 15,000kms on the clock (when it was last advertised) its also been registered in 3states and crossed the country twice. it's just a one tonne commodore ute..

It is now legally a HX and should have all ADR27A equipment on it which includes sealed fuel tank etc. So you may (if unlucky) get pulled up one day by an RTA or EPA inspector and get defected for not having all the HX pollution equipment. But apart from that there isn't all that much to be worried about, except the value of the car is a lot less than what it would be with its original chassis. The only other issue is other ADR's applicable to HX that aren't on your HQ, eg if the HQ body was a 1972 it may have clear front indicators and naked alloy wiper arms, these are amber and black respectively on HX. There is also another ADR relative to the brake warning indication that differs.

I have a genuine sandman van. It has a hz rts chassis with a hq sandman ute chassis number cut and shut into it. It has genuine hx ute xx7 ute tags on a hj sandman van body. You just can't ague that's it's not a genuine sandman can you![]()
