    Really????

My 253 auto VB SL sedan was noticeably more ecomomical than dads 308 auto VK wagon and the wagon was very noticeably more powerful.... owned both back in 84 and both were bog standard factory engines.

it really comes down to diff ratio and how you drive the car..if you dawdle then there is really no difference..if you are a bit heavy on the throttle from the lights there would be a difference if you were driving a 253 auto with a 3.55 diff and your mate was driving a 308 auto with a 2.78 diff...you with 253 would be gone....way way too many variants to answer his question without personally seeing his driving style...:knockout::knockout::knockout:

your vb sl 253 would have been a 2 barrel with points dizzy and your dads vk was 4 barrel with electronic...what were the diff ratios??

My 84 wb with 4.2 and m20 3.36 diff gets flogged by my brothers 82 wb with 4.2 m20 3.08 diff. It also flogged the 83 wb I had with 4.2 m20 3.36 diff.
The engines have both been rebuilt by the same machine shop and run the same cams. When I say flogged, I mean around town at the lights and definately on the highway.
I know that the 3.08 should be slower off the mark but I think that you can run it longer between gear changes gives it heaps more advantage in a drag.
As far as standard cars go, I reckon my other brothers wb statesman with 3.08 diff had more balls than any 253 I have ever driven. For a big car that old 5 litre used to get up and boogie.

Agree, am running basically stock 308 in my ute with M21 and 3.08 diff - the tall first gear makes a real difference once you get off the line.

anything with 2.78 and 3.08 will out drive a 3.36 or 3.55 in the long run...but the question was ...in normal driving conditions...now ask yourselves the question...what is normal.?...:D:D

Yeah I was just thinking about that after I posted that. Is cracking them open and listening for the induction noise through the secondaries normal?
speaking of which, i went for a crack in a mates UC Torana with the A9X style spoiler on the bonnet. How cool do they sound when you stick it into them. You can hear the secondaries snap shut when you get of the throttle.
