Yeah you could fudge your way around it. Not sure this guy is keen on anything other than a Holden engine though? Nothing has been said along these lines. Like I said cash it in and buy a poverty pack if your that way inclined it would make a whole lot more sense. No point having a the intrinsic value tied up into something that is no longer an original Sandman. Might as well gain the cash for the car you really would like.

Anyway, they're just opinions (Speaking out loud).

The hole in the firewall is only a 32mm round hole, eaily welded up if you ever need to. Or if you don't mind a slightly jumpy speedo use the trimatic/4spd speedo cable hole, cable will reach. And the support hole in the passenger's floor is only a small 5mm or so hole, just fill it with black goo if going back. Harness is easy as Adam says.
Or screw a VN-VR speed sensor into the TH400 speedo attachment point and buy a cable speedo drive motor from the US:

Oh just put the 308 in the front and the 253 in the back. You could maybe even set the 253 up with the 4 speed as a trans axle and get a Dana diff for the front and drive that with the 308 and turbo 400.

I think the ute done like this was called Bloback. Had a blown Chev in the tray driving a Caddy transaxle and a 253 in the front driving an alternator and power steering.
