Thread: Van wheels number 11

SM has done a good job
I think it's more of a history lesson for a lot of the younger readers,a lot of 18-20 yr old probably
wouldn't know the history of street machines today. Some kids like our own James are lucky .
Kids these days are playing with what's available to them ,hilux's , vn-vy's ,xr6 falcons etc.Just like we did in the day, they were plentiful.
The first decent van magazine articles in nearly 20yrs, if SM keeps it up it will catch up with the times. Not everybody wants a stock van with black vinyl seats that's going to burn your arse when parked in the sun for 10min & the only difference between them is the color. The way some are carrying on the "windowless sandman" is going to end up like the xy gt falcon, more driving around than actually produced...

I sometimes look back through my old Vanwheels mags and think how we must have looked to the general public then. We thought we were cool (and I guess we were at the time), but we all grow up (unfortunately) and the van scene needs to too. I guess the whole custom car scene has moved a long way from what it was and how it was perceived back then.

    We treated women "differently".
    We drank and drove.
    We didn't wear seatbelts.
We drove around with a mob in the back.
We did wheelies (not burnouts, nobody did them) every time we dropped the clutch.
    And there's a lot more....

These things don't cut it now and neither do a lot of the custom touches applied to vans of the time. It's hard to draw the line though because everyone's taste is different.
I had hair and it was LONG!!!!

Possibly Neil. I just hope they mix it up and show some of the Vans that missed out and some of the more up to date stuff.
I guess Simon has a bit to do with this. He is very '80's in his mind set. Well at least his builds. Still great to have the Vans in the spot light.

James ,he will only be able to do so many stories on so called original sandman's etc before he runs out.
And yes I do know that vans left the factory with out windows and where dealer fitted ,Like so many other options like
A/c ,country packs, Lsdiffs, external sun visor etc
I just have a personal hate for people thinking every van that has bucket seats & Gts dash is a genuine thing & filling in side windows, what are the sides of these vans going to be like in 5-10 years time.Imagine trying to repair them then.
I'm just glad to see vans have a bit more light shone on them , but we'll just have to wait and see for how long,And if it wasn't for Simon's love of vans the switch would still be off
    Regards

    Agree!
I think what Rod and Jennie are doing with their latest van is a nice compromise between stock and custom.... A few sensible additions while not destroying originality and all done with a high degree of detail.

And Flamenco, I think we all had LONG hair back then. Mine was so long I could sit on it!
Vans.... This is the 2nd time round the block, 40 years later! talk about turning back the clock!
